What speed should I troll at?

  • Trolling speed is generally a function of the lure design. Some lures are designed to troll 1.5 mph and others need 2.5 to 3.0 mph before they start to dance. So if you prefer slow trolling, match the lure to your fishing style.
  • When using downriggers, the correct speed is generally determined by the angle of your downrigger cable. One rule of thumb is to keep the cable at 45 degrees. Perhaps a little less for more lethargic fish like staging chinook and a little more for aggressive fish like winter chinook or fall coho.
